If you are following a low saturated fat diet and have become someone who studies food content labels, you will have noticed that many ready made bread and baking products have a very high fat content, often containing really bad fats like trans fats or highly refine oils and lards. You might have found it is nearly impossible to buy breads that don’t contain something as non-descriptive as ‘vegetable oil’ or ‘shortenings’. While producers in many countries are now required to list the ingredient/contents of their produce they are not obliged to specifically name the kind of fats they used to make lets say a pastry. You can sometimes get a slightly better idea by studying the percentages of saturated, unsaturated and poly unsaturated fats. Some even list the amount of omega 3,6 and 9 fats. And even if they list lets say rapeseed or canolla oil as an ingredients that doesn’t tell you if they use a highly refine and thereby poor quality version of a potentially healthy fat or not. Those of you follow the OMS Program and/or who want to stick to your dietary recommendations all the way will probably switch to baking your own breads, cakes, pastries etc.
